Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
I am currently looking at buying my dad a telescope for Christmas. He lives up on a hill in a city and can look into the valley where the city centre is. Would this be recommended?
A:
For terrestrial viewing, spotting scopes (http://www.ozscopes.com.au/telescope/spotting-scope) are the best. They work best for day time viewing and have optics that are optimised to enhance the clarity and contrast of the colours in the day time.
I recommend any of the Celestron Ultimas or Barska Blackhawks -
Celestron Ultima 80 20-60x80 http://www.ozscopes.com.au/celestron-ultima-80-45-20-60x-spotting-scope.html
Celestron Ultima 65 - 45° Angled 18-55x http://www.ozscopes.com.au/celestron-ultima-65-45-18-55x-spotting-scope.html
Barska 18 - 36 x 50 http://www.ozscopes.com.au/barska-18-36-x-50-blackhawk-straight-eyepiece-spotting-scope.html
Barska 20 – 60 x 60 http://www.ozscopes.com.au/barska-20-60-x-60-blackhawk-straight-eyepiece-spotting-scope.html
The Barska are pretty good as they come with a lifetime warranty. The Celestron ones come with 2 years warranty. In terms of quality, both the Celestron Ultimas and the Barska Blackhawks are similar and both are waterproof and fogproof. Which one you choose will depend on differences in the specifications. The Celestron Ultima 80 20-60x80 has a larger objective lens size (80mm) so it'll be bulkier but it'll also let in more light and the field of view and clarity in details will be better than the others. As for magnification, you may opt for the 20-60x magnification spotting scopes if you want a higher magnification to be able to see further.
If the scope will be used mainly for astronomy and a little bit of land viewing, then any of the refractor telescopes would be good. (http://www.ozscopes.com.au/telescope/refractor-telescope) I would recommend the 70AZ (http://www.ozscopes.com.au/refractor-telescope-celestron-astromaster-70az.html) or the 909AZ (http://www.ozscopes.com.au/saxon-909az3-refractor-telescope.html) as the mount will make it easier to use for land viewing :)

Q:
Are you able to gift wrap items?
A:
Unfortunately, at this time we don't actually offer gift wrapping for any of our products.
Q:
I am interested in purchasing a telescope to view planets, stars etc. Can you recommend an easy to use model for around $300?
A:
The AstroMaster 70AZ is an excellent telescope for around the $300 mark. It is very easy to use and great for beginners. It will give you a fantastic view of the moon and a basic view of the planets. Generally, if you are after a view of the planets, it is best to get a telescope with the biggest aperture for you budget.
If you were happy to go a little over the $300 mark, then you could consider the AstroMaster 90AZ, which is a bigger version of the 70AZ. This has a 90mm aperture, so you will get a bigger, brighter picture. We currently have this on sale for $338.95.
http://www.ozscopes.com.au/refractor-telescope-celestron-astromaster-90az.html
If you wanted to consider a reflector telescope, you could also consider the SkyWatcher 114mm SW450 which can be found on our website here:
http://www.ozscopes.com.au/skywatcher-114mm-reflector-telescope.html
Reflector telescopes are an open tube and use mirrors to produce the image. They require more maintenance than a refractor telescope which is a sealed tube. They tend to produce a bigger, brighter image but not quite so sharp as a refractor telescope.
