A very good scope for the serious astronomer
    Overall Score
I’ve had a few scopes and describe myself as an amateur astronomer with average to good experience and knowledge. I purchased the Celestron Nexstar Evolution 200mm Wi-Fi scope from Oz Scopes. After a period of deep research, I choose this scope after selling my other two scopes. The price of the scope would probably suit the more serious hobbyist willing to outlay a reasonable amount of cash to view the stars and planets. The scope arrived quickly and was undamaged although the unthinking courier decided to drop the box the last 30cms over our front fence as he thought I was not at home. Fortunately, Australia Post sent me a feedback email in which I happily vented my displeasure. Anyway, the scope was easily assembled and I charged the inbuilt batteries up. First impressions are that the scope was well packed as it had to be with my courier experience. The scope is very stable on the mount and solidly built. I was very happy to be able to control the scope via my android tablet and the free planetarium program – Sky Portal from Celestron. Other users might go for the reasonably priced Sky Safari 4 plus to control your scope. Both are excellent apps and Sky Portal is based on the Sky Safari app anyway. Sky Portal is free and is probably suited to newer observers and has over 4 hours of audio describing a lot of the more popular objects you would observe. Although the scope mount is Alt Azithimuth and not suitable for long exposure deep sky astro image taking, a wedge is available for budding astro photographers. The scope can take short exposures of planets and the bright deep sky objects with your DSLR or eyepiece camera. There are ample eyepiece holders and a handy rail to stop them falling onto the floor. The batteries last for up to 10 hours depending on operational use and you can even charge your tablet device as well with a handy usb port. The scope is easy to transport to the viewing site due to its appropriate weight. I liked the extra bolt holes for attaching extra finder scopes. The tripod has markers to easily set suitable heights for all users. The scope has a handy level too and a sturdy metal spreader. The indicator lights show battery strength and Wi-Fi connectivity. There is a red light placed over the eyepiece holders. All the lights can be turned off if required. A hand control is provided if Wi-Fi cannot work due to interference from other Wi-Fi scopes. The hand control button has been upgraded with different styled buttons to feel for easy identification of functions in the dark. The readout on the hand control is clear. The menu is easy to navigate. The single arm appears sturdy enough and the two huge clutch releases are handy and easy to lock and unlock. This is a major upgrade and improvement to enable easy positioning of the tube. The motor noise when slewing at high speed does not worry me at all. The motor noise when in tracking mode is nearly silent. The align procedure using Celestron’s Skyalign program is easy and quick, meaning little time wasted on alignment procedures. Up to 10 objects can be aligned but three are only normally necessary to provide good accuracy for goto. The scope can also be used for terrestrial viewing if an erect image diagonal is purchased. The optical tube assembly is easily removed and installed if necessary. The android app provides for numerous settings to be set or changed once the scope is connected via Wi-Fi. I was surprised that a scope of this price and quality came with a cheapo red spot finder which proved adequate at best. I would have thought that Celstron could have upgraded the finder to the next level. Some observers may find the red spot finder annoying and upgrade to a finder scope which is better suited. The goto accuracy is spot on and can enable an observer to locate the more fainter objects. The supplied eyepieces, 40 and 10mm Plossl are of good quality, but keen observers would need more as time goes on as well as planetary and Deep Sky filters. Now to the actual view one can see through the scope. I viewed the spectacular Andromeda Galaxy through the 40mm eyepiece and even with terrible viewing conditions it presented very well. The full moon presented as a crisp and sharp view with medium viewing conditions and with tracking it was kept in the field of view for all the time I was viewing. The focus knob takes a little getting used to, but I suspect it is something I will master in time. The best scope is the one that is used the most. This scope it can be easily transported to the garden or dark site without the need for separate power or extension leads. The supplied manual is adequate although it should be expanded for inexperience users or people new to astronomy. The Evolution is easy to set up and use and is suitable for a large range of astronomers from newbies to more seasoned observers. Review by Graham (Posted on 6/10/2017)
