To get you started, you should first get to know some basics about telescopes. The three basic types are refracting telescopes, reflecting telescopes, and Catadioptric or Cassegrain telescopes. They use either lenses or mirrors or a combination of both, and their different builds mean that each has different advantages and disadvantages, and also that some may be more suitable for your purposes than others.
Something else you should know is that the numbers in telescopes' names refer to their aperture or objective lens size (in either inches or mm). Aperture is the most crucial feature for astronomical telescopes because it determines how much light it can capture and therefore, how many objects you can see in space.
