    Product Description

Baader AstroSolar Safety Solar Film For Telescope

This Baader AstroSolar Safety Film is A4 sized, measuring 230mm x 300mm. It's a specially manufactured streak-and-blister-free foil, without Mylar! Baader Planetarium's AstroSolarâ„¢ Safety Film delivers white light views of the Sun that are unmatched by any other objective solar filter or material. The views through AstroSolar display fine solar details, including fine penumbral detail, solar granulation, and lighter colored faculae. The disk is set against a dark background, free of the haze and scatter that is common in typical 'mylar' films or inexpensive glass filters. The performance of AstroSolar is even more remarkable when considering its very low cosr. We even have sizes large enough for producing full-aperture filters for very large telescopes. When combined with Baader's tips for a simple do-it-yourself filter mount, anyone can construct a complete low cost - High Quality - white light solar filter for any telescope.

It is possible to further improve the stability and sharpness of the solar image through the use of the Baader Solar Continuum Filter. Views of granulation and faculae are particularly enhanced through the use of this filter, in combination with AstroSolar. Users of achromatic refractors will be particularly pleased with the performance using this additional filter.

This precision film was made in laboratories for nuclear and particle physics, and - due to its absolute homogeneity - the foil attains the optical performance of high quality plane-parallel glass filters.

Used this to make a filter for my 8" cassegrain. Works very nicely. Review by Peter (Posted on 6/10/2017)
Excellent- I've wanted to look at the 'hidden' sun for so long - now I can
    Overall Score
Works really well. I attached it to the sunshade on my 70mm refractor- not as flimsy as I thought it would be. Easy to make a filter with. I used an old shoe box for material, a glue stick, superglue and some PVA glue. Compass and scissors. Using the 'sun shade' as a guide, I inserted a 2inch wide strip of the thicker parts of the shoe box. Super glued the ends together whilst in position. Removed from sunshade once glue set. Put slits on one end every 10mm, some 10mm deep. Folded these back. Glued this assembly with PVA onto some rings that I cut out which were about 5mm id smaller and 20mm larger (outer diameter) than the sun shade. These rings sandwiched the Baader AstroSolar Safety Film with the help of a glue-stick. Turned out great, I made a few videos of sunspots that day.. Review by Piotr (Posted on 6/10/2017)
Great quality and pretty simple to use.

Bought this to make a custom lens filter for my DSLR to take photos of the sun. I was extremely surprised by how fragile it really is; it was almost like tissue paper. Cutting it out was a little tricky but I was patient and took my time. Within 10 minutes I had the filter cut out and it works perfectly! I was extremely excited when I saw how clear the image turned out. Review by Dean (Posted on 6/10/2017)

    Magic sun filter
    Overall Score
After reading reports on, and checking the prices of sun filters, I decided to buy the Baader AstroSolar Film and give it a go. When I received the film I was a bit worried about the flimsiness of it, and had second thoughts about my abilities. Nevertheless I started building it following the enclosed instructions. It wasn't very difficult to construct, but did require a degree of patience to complete. When I fitted the Solar film I managed to get a crease on one side, but when I tested the filter there was no leakage; so I was very pleased with myself. On using the filter on my Celestron Astromaster 130EQ, I was amazed at the Sunspot clarity. There is no imparted colour invasion of the Sun, and therefore a true reflection of it is gained, with the improvement of contrast to boot. I would recommend this film to most people, but remember the need for patience. Review by Ian Woolley (Posted on 6/10/2017)

Recieved the film on thursday and made the filter that night, only had a chance to check it out for a few hours next day due to cloud. The film works very well, was able to see 2 sun spots on the surface very happy with purchase. Review by John Chadwick (Posted on 6/10/2017)

I bought this film for the 10-May-2013 Solar Eclipse. I used this sheet to make the solar filters for my 6SE and the tele-zoom lens. Finally I got very sharp and clear image . Very happy with the quality. Review by Yanxin (Posted on 6/10/2017)

It's only solar filter film so there's not much to say about it. It works.
However I was very happy with the speed of delivery. I received it the day after ordering. Can't beat that!

Arrived very promptly, well packaged & good service. Would definitely do business with OzScopes again. Product does the job but is expensive for what it is (but the price here is very competitive nonetheless). Review by Fred Rochler (Posted on 6/10/2017)

    Good product but bad sizing
    Overall Score
The product is very good quality, well packaged and arrived promptly, but it is NOT A4 as stated. I had hoped to make a full aperture filter for an 8" telescope, but it is actually 200 x 290 which is just too small to achieve this including overlaps.

I would question why it is supplied in this size? Surely telescopes come in standard sizes -6", 8", 10" etc so why supply it as 200x280? (The next size up - 500x1000 - is ridiculously large and expensive)

Otherwise I think it is good value.

Material recommended to make solar filter for telescope. Got instructions off internet and made an offset filter that permits enough light. Telescope will be set up next week hopefully to see transit of venus - filter can be used for other solar viewing. This has made a cheap effective filter and there was enough material left to give to a friend to make one for his scope too. Review by Martha Truelove (Posted on 6/10/2017)

I found the solar fim pretty hard to make filters (it would be easier a second time)(I wish they made filters allready mounted in frames of various sizes so you would only have to make the tubes) though when I had they gave a very nice clear image. It was delivered promptly & was well packed; the lady who answered my queries (June) was very helpful. Review by John Freeman (Posted on 6/10/2017)
