SkyWatcher 70/900 AZ3 Refractor Telescope
Also Available in EQ Mount
Retail Price $299
The Skywatcher 709 AZ is an Achromatic Refractor that uses a 2-element fully multi-coated Lens. With 70mm aperture, this telescope has significant 36% more light gathering capacity than 60mm telescope, provides enough light to bring you clear, crisp images of the popular celestial bodies and brighter deep space objects.
With maximum practical magnification of 140x, this Sky-watcher Telescope is able to show you the details on the large planets such as Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. The cratered landscape of the moon is also worth to observe under different lighting conditions and different moon phases.
The Refractor AdvantageSince a refractor does not use mirrors to view objects, you get a generally brighter image and a correct, right side up image is displayed. This makes it usable for viewing terrestrial objects.
Strong and Sturdy ConstructionPremium materials and expert craftsmanship go into each and every Skywatcher Refractor Telescope. The bundled EQ1 mount is designed to provide a stable, vibration resistant platform for stargazing. It enables precise control over the telescope’s slewing and tracking.
*Notes: The image through all finder scopes will be upside down.

- Skywatcher SW709 Refractor Telescope
The finish to the telescope is really nice and the assembly was easy and smooth. The AZ3 mount is solid and the slow motion controls work well. The tri-pod is not flimsy at all. The standard issue eyepieces seem to work well enough and the 5x24 finderscope and 3 x barlow lense compliment the package.
Ozscopes have also been very helpful - assisting me with changing my order, and following up afterwards. The telescope arrived quickly and in good condition. All the pieces were in the box.
I have only one issue - the coarse altitude movement on the mount is more difficult to adjust than I would have liked, so I definitely recommend the first time buyer go to a few stores and check some mounts out in the flesh before purchasing anything.
For the money, this is not just a good starter telescope, it is a good telescope. It looks great, feels great, is light enough to move easily and hopefully it will encourage me to buy a bigger one one day!
As I now know they say - clear skies..
