Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
I bought (from ozscopes) a celestron 4 se + a saxson eds 5.2mm) about a year ago. The 25mm eyepiece that came with the 4se is great but the 5.2mm is very poor. Is it possible the eds 5.2mm was damaged in transit or are they usually crappy like this? I like the 4se and am enjoying some great viewing of jupiter currently too.
A:
With a 6mm eyepiece you should definitely be able to focus on an image with your telescope, compared to the 5.2mm. The problem with using an eyepiece that gives you a magnification over the telescope's highest useful magnification is that the image will just become dark and blurry, which is why you couldn't focus with the 5.2mm. A 6mm eyepiece will give you a magnification of 220x that falls just below your telescope's highest useful magnification, so you will be able to focus on an image with it. As long as you get an eyepiece that gives you a magnification of 241x and under, you'll be able to focus with your telescope.
