celestron - Review by Kristy
I bought this telescope for my husband who loves it, set up was fairly easy and the view is crystal clear. I will get a lot of enjoyment out of this telescope (Posted on 27/12/09)
Frequently Asked Questions
Q:
I am 13 years old and want to become an astronomer but don't have a telescope, what is an ideal one with a max budget of $200-$250?
A:
For beginners, anything with a 70mm aperture and above would be ideal. For your budget, the best scope to look at would be the Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ Refractor Telescope (http://www.ozscopes.com.au/refractor-telescope-celestron-astromaster-70az.html). It has a focal length of 900mm, and has closed tubes so it's easier to maintain and is more portable too. Refractors are generally a bit pricier than other types of telescopes with the same aperture, but they give better quality image in terms of colour contrast and sharpness.
If you can stretch your budget a little bit more, a really good telescope is the Skywatcher 6" Dobsonian Telescope SW580 (http://www.ozscopes.com.au/skywatcher-6-dobsonian-telescope.html). Dobsonians have bigger apertures and longer focal lengths for a price lower than the other types of telescopes, and are definitely value for money when it comes to buying your first telescope. This telescope has a 1200mm focal length, which gives you brighter images. However, Dobsonians are bulkier and harder to move around, and they're also harder to maintain due to their open tube designs.
Ultimately it comes down to your personal preferences as well :) If you want a telescope you can bring around, and if you want something easier to maintain, the Astromaster 70AZ would be suitable for you. If you want something more powerful that lets you see more, and don't plan on bringing your telescope around much, then the Dobsonian is the way to go.
